About Beth Carvalho
Elizabeth Santos Leal de Carvalho, known for her artist name Beth Carvalho, was a Brazilian samba singer, composer, and instrumentalist born on May 5, 1946, in Rio de Janeiro. Named "Godmother of Samba," she had a essential role on the renovation of samba, mainly because of hr blends of samba's roots with modern rythms.
Beth's career was boosted in the late 60's after she got third place at the International Festival of Song, but she soon realized that her work should be focused in samba, which she belived it was "the true voice of brazilian people".
Another point that made her be nicknamed "godmother of samba" was bringing to the world many legends of samba when they were starting their career, some good examples are Zeca Pagodinho and the group Fundo de Quintal.
Along her career (which was extended for many decades), she kept the roots of samba and at the same time brought innovation to music. She also won a Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
