About Zeca Pagodinho

Jessé Gomes da Silva Filho, known as Zeca Pagodinho, is one of the most beloved and emblematic figures of Brazilian samba and pagode. Born on February 4, 1959, in Irajá, Rio de Janeiro. His rise to fame is directly connected to his roots, where he was born and raised in a community full of the essence of samba and pagoda, that environment later pushed him to join circles of pagode in the Cacique de Ramos Carnival block, a cradle of pagode, where he started his career.

 

His career rose when, in the 1980’s he was invited to sing “Camarão Que Dorme a Onda Leva" with the legend Beth Carvalho, who was impressed with his talent. This encouraged him to make his first album “Zeca Pagodinho” in 1986, and since that day, his discography kept expanding rapidly with albums and songs that catch new listeners every day because of the joy and originality present on them.

 

Pagodinho’s music are mainly acclaimed because of its simplicity and authenticity which resulted in, beside the fans, a large number of awards, including several Latin Grammys. His lifestyle is ruled by one sentence: “deixa a vida me levar” (let life carry me), that sentence also became the title of a famous music of his.

 

Along his four-decade career Pagodinho was inspiration for many samba and pagode singers. His work spread samba and pagode all over Brazil and that is part of his legacy, which is also made by his charismatic and original way to be in and out of the stages. This legacy made him a living legend.

Zeca Pagodinho was born Jessé Gomes da Silva Filho on February 4, 1959 in, Irajá, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. As a young boy he frequently skipped classes to participate in samba circles. Before his career started, he worked in jobs like office-boy and annotator in games of chance, at the same time he would also go to blocks around the Cacique de Ramos carnival.

After taking the decision to become a musician he took lessons with the famous Beth Carvalho who recorded a song with him called “Camarão Que Dorme a Onda Leva.” After the absolute success of the music, he featured the albums “Raça Brasileira”, and “Zeca Pagodinho” which was also a success in between the samba/pagode community.

Throughout the years Zeca continued to released albums like “Patota de Cosme”,” Jeito Moleque,” “Boêmio Feliz,” “Mania da Gente,” “Pixote” and others. By 1998 he released a self-titled album again, which contained acclaimed singles like “Vai Vadiar” and “Seu Balancê”, and achieved platinum certification in Brazil.

For more than a decade Zeca Pagodinho kept expanding his audience with songs and albums that showed his capacity to keep innovating without losing his roots, he also made live albums like “Acústico MTV – Zeca Pagodinho in 2003.”

In 2015 he released the album “Ser Humano”, which earned him the Latin Grammy for Best Samba/Pagode Album. In 2024 he made many shows and a album in commemoration of forty years of career.
